I pushed through the mental barrier that surrounded every mind Iâd ever entered, and found myself back inside the pirateâs head. Just like normal. Or new normal, since popping in and out of peopleâs heads was something Iâd only been doing for a day.
Or was it two?
I realized I had no idea how much time had passed since the Pegasus entered the wormhole that changed my life. Before that, a psychic ability was something I dreamed of having, and pirates were just roguesâlovable ones, most of the timeâin adventure stories. And here I was, just a short time later, using my strange version of Dadâs empathic ability to enter the mind of a real pirate, one who had nothing in common with the ones in stories. All so I could keep my bodyguards from getting themselves killed to avenge my death. Well, supposed death, since that was just a ruse to get the new pirate captain off my back long enough for Dad to get my message, mobilize the Arkâs Landing Navy, track me down with his empathic ability, and save the day.
No wonder Iâve been so tired lately.
Anyway, back to the pirateâs mind. His was filled with the filth I expected from this bunch of psychopaths who captured the Pegasus. Sparks of lust flashed through his mind nonstop. Itâs like the guy couldnât look at a woman without imagining having his way with her.
Were all guys like this pirate? Surely not, right? I mean, after twenty years of marriage, Dad still only had eyes for Mom. My brother Eric didnât make a drooling fool of himself whenever my friends came over for a visit. And I already knew the pirates were a bunch of sickos. So most guys were probably fine. For the sake of my future dating life, I sure hoped I was right.
Iâd let my mind wander, so yanked my attention back to the pirateâs emotional landscape. It was just as barren of warm, human emotions as all the other pirate minds had been. I dodged the sparks of lust as best I could and shuddered at the visions carried by the ones I couldnât avoid. Flashes of greed hit me now and then, too, but there werenât as many of those as Iâd expected. Maybe that was because the pirate had women all around him and the money he expected to get for the passengers wasnât in his hand yet?
Whatever. I wasnât inside the guyâs head to figure out what drove his depraved desires. I was here to get him to go to Conley and Barber.
If I was a telepath, I could probably just give him a direct order to go to my bodyguards. But Iâm an empath. How could I do that just by using the guyâs emotions?
I had to try something, so I ordered, It sure would be fun to taunt the dead rich girlâs bodyguards. Laugh at them for completely failing at their job. Yeah, that would be the funniest thing ever. I bet it will scare the rest of the passengers, too, and that will make them easier to handle.
